Happy KRANK FORMULA FIRE Holidays!
December 5, 2024
The industry is bursting at the seams this time of year with a wide variety of holiday gifts for your golfer. Nowadays you can buy the latest electronic golf gadget, whacky novelty items, and even clever pranks like exploding golf balls. But if you’re really interested in making your gift count, Krank Golf has you covered. A custom-fitted Formula Fire Driver or Fairway Wood can actually lower the numbers on your favorite golfer’s scorecard.
Golfers of all ages absolutely love to shoot a lower score, because in golf, a low score is the “gold standard” for their best performance at the end of the day. Unlike most sports, the fewest number of strokes it takes to complete a round then the better the golfer played. Unfortunately, many recreational golfers give up strokes off every tee box where a driver is the club of choice. At Krank, we don’t build irons or putters; our focus is to improve a golfer’s distance and accuracy with a Krank Formula Fire driver.
If you’ve been told that you shouldn’t spend money buying a pricier driver because those clubs are designed for professionals or low-handicap players and won’t provide benefits for your high-handicap golfer, then you’ve come to the right place. Lance Reader, owner and founder of Krank Golf, explains, “Only one percent of golfers swing a club at 115 mph or faster. Unless they do, they haven’t been able to take full advantage of the latest in driver technology.”
USGA Spring Effect Interpretation
Appendix II, Rule 4c of the Rules of Golf specifically outlines limitations on the flexibility of the clubhead for how much the face of the club can flex inward after impact with a golf ball and then springs back at a lesser speed as it returns to its original shape. Since this restriction is based on the USGA’s desire for consumers to believe the Pros playing on TV are hitting the same golf clubs you buy, it severely hurts the average golfer’s ability to take full advantage of the latest technology of precision machining. The fact is that today’s professionals would actually lose distance with a flexier driver face as the majority of tournament golfers have massive swing speeds of 115 mph-plus. At Krank Golf, we know this to be true as we built the drivers that won 26 Professional Long Drive World Championships.
What Is a High COR/CT Driver?
Golf enthusiasts are always searching for ways to improve their distance off the tee. To meet this demand, club manufacturers began employing precision CNC milling processes to create thinner, metal driver faces. This modification enhances the "spring effect", or “trampoline effect,” by increasing the coefficient of restitution (COR). Essentially, a higher COR means the ball compresses less upon impact, leading to faster ball speeds and reduced spin.
The concept of COR has roots dating back to Sir Isaac Newton’s physics theories on the collision of two objects. For context, the COR of a persimmon wood face was around 0.780, whereas a shaved metal driver face can reach an impressive 0.930. However, this exceeds the current USGA limit of 0.822 (+/- 0.008, for a maximum of 0.830), which regulates the 83% of energy transfer from clubhead to ball to maintain fair play in sanctioned competitions.
Measuring COR is far from simple—it involves launching a ball at the clubface and calculating the velocity of the ball post-impact at the face’s center. To simplify the process, the USGA introduced the CT (characteristic time) testing device in 2004. This portable tool is widely used at sanctioned tournaments to assess driver face conformity. Instead of measuring energy transfer, it evaluates the amount of time in microseconds that a metal ball stays in contact with the clubface during a pendulum test.
It’s worth noting that while the USGA and R&A rely on characteristic time to evaluate the spring effect of driver faces, COR remains the official metric for fairway woods, hybrids, and irons. By understanding these metrics and advancements, recreational golfers can make more informed decisions about their equipment to maximize their game. Whether you intend to play in USGA-sanctioned events or not, Krank can build a driver custom built for your game.
Do Formula Fire Drivers Go On Sale at Christmas?
During the holiday season, golf club manufacturers typically provide promotions and offers for their prized selection of golf clubs. For instance, you have Christmas just ahead, so it is a great time to get your favorite Krank Formula Fire driver head milled to the correct thickness for your actual swing speed. And.... likely at a price with a holiday discount. So get started on building a Formula Fire driver to improve your game and click here for a quick driver overview.
At Krank Golf, our goal is to always get you fitted to the perfect driver for your swing which also includes the best shaft. After all, there is really nothing that is more important for improving your game and boosting your attitude every time you head to the course. It is a different trip to the first tee when you know you’ve got the right club in your bag. To get started on your journey for longer and more accurate drives, use Krank’s interactive driver fitting tool now.
As you might know, golfers tend to fudge a little on the actual numbers about their game and most do not know their exact swing speed. In fact, it typically requires the use of electronic equipment like a launch monitor to get an accurate measurement. Since most recreational golfers do not have access to such equipment, Lance Reader created the Krank Zone page that converts average driving distance to the Formula Fire driver that best matches your swing. Just click on the NEXT button, answer the questions asked, and we’ll take care of the rest.
